3 Ways we Can BLASPHEME the Holy Spirit

If there is one warning, the biggest warning I want to send out to any brother or sister, any Christian, this warning is that we should be careful not to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. To blaspheme the Holy Spirit, Jesus said, is the most dangerous thing. And if we do that, we commit the unpardonable sin. It is one sin that God does not grant repentance for, and that is when we blaspheme the Holy Spirit. That is why I want to give an example today to illustrate what blaspheming the Holy Spirit is.

Imagine you have a young child. Imagine you are a father, you are a mother. And this child is very, very young. They don't know what it means to sin yet. They don't know what it means to be evil. They don't know what evil is. They are in that stage that they don't even know that they have their own will. So they are not selfish. They are pure. They are innocent. And they are holy. Now imagine somebody evil, a wicked man comes, takes your baby, takes your child, and throws it in the mud, in dirt. And they hurt your child. What would you do as a parent? How would you feel against the wickedness of that man? I am giving you this example today to show you and illustrate how the Holy Spirit is seen in the eyes of God.

The Holy Spirit, brothers and sisters, is like this young, pure, innocent child. The Holy Spirit is sensitive to any action we take, anything we say against Him. If He is not welcome in a temple, He retracts Himself. He is quenched. And He removes Himself from anything, from any situation that might throw at Him dirt and mud. And we need to be careful with how we act with the Holy Spirit.

When I looked into that, and when I sought God for wisdom when it comes to blaspheming the Holy Spirit, He showed me three ways that we can do that. And I believe there are three ways that we can blaspheme the Holy Spirit. I want to talk about these three ways today.

The first way is when Jesus told the Pharisees not to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. He was casting out a demon, and some Pharisees came and accused Him of having an evil spirit. Now Jesus answered them and said, “You can say anything about the Father and the Son, and you will be forgiven. But be careful not to blaspheme the Holy Spirit.” He said that because they accused Him of having an evil spirit. This is like saying that the Holy Spirit is filthy. And this is precisely what blaspheming the Holy Spirit is.

Now how does this apply to us today? There are many Christians who blaspheme the Holy Spirit without knowing. That happens frequently when two Christians argue together. If I come and speak to another believer who has the Holy Spirit, and then we disagree on something, if I start telling that person that they have a demon, then I would be in danger of doing the worst sin, which is blaspheming the Holy Spirit. I would be doing the same thing that these Pharisees did to Jesus. I might not know that this person has the Holy Spirit, but when I say that they have a demon, then I would be saying that the Holy Spirit in them is filthy. Now many people can plead ignorance, and I believe that God has mercy, if somebody did that without knowing. But we should be extremely careful when we discuss with other believers who have the Holy Spirit. And some people may have the Holy Spirit and not believe the same things. So we need to be very careful not to say that to them.

Another way this could happen, and this is the second way, is when we argue with other people, and especially unbelievers, we can speak to them about Jesus, about the Gospel, about the Holy Spirit. But then if they start mocking, and if they start saying bad things to us, and insulting Jesus, insulting the Holy Spirit, then we would be putting Jesus Christ and the Spirit at the disposal of these unbelievers. This is why Jesus said, “Do not throw your pearls to swine.” The Holy Spirit is a pearl, and if we dangle that pearl in front of swine, they will trample it. He said also, “Do not throw what is holy to the dogs.” We need to be careful not to dangle Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, we will put the Holy Spirit at the disposal of swine, who would then blaspheme the Holy Spirit because of our arguing with them. Jesus did not ever say to us that if they don't accept our words, we should stay there and convince them about Him. Jesus spoke with authority, and He spoke with parables. He said to His apostles, “When you go into a city or into a home, let your peace come upon that home. If they don't receive you or your words, then remove the dust from your feet, and go into another city”. We need to be careful not to put the Holy Spirit and Jesus at the disposal of people who are going to mock, who do not appreciate the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is precious. Be careful not to dangle Him in front of swine and dogs and unbelievers who don't know the holiness of God, the holiness of the blood of Jesus Christ.

Finally, I want to read to you from Hebrews 10:26, to show you the third way that we can blaspheme the Holy Spirit. The author of Hebrews says, “26For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?”

Notice that this is the same thing. When we have the Holy Spirit, and when we get to the knowledge of the truth, this is even more than being born again. When we get hold of God who lives inside of us, in His fullness, and we see things to come, we know the power of God. If we have that, and then we turn our backs to God, to the Holy Spirit, and then go jump back in mud, in deliberate sin, then we would be in danger of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. This is like profaning the blood of Jesus Christ. This is like taking Jesus Christ and dragging Him in the mud, trampling Him under our feet, and outraging the Spirit of grace.

That's why, brothers and sisters, it is very dangerous to abuse the grace of God, to abuse the Spirit of grace. And this is my third warning to the believers who believe in these evil doctrines, like “once saved, always saved”, and Calvinism, and who believe that they can keep on sinning after becoming born again. Be careful, because this is what it means to blaspheme the Holy Spirit.

You can blaspheme the Holy Spirit when you turn your back to God, and go back to deliberate sin, and jump in the mud. Don't do that to Jesus. Don't do that to the Holy Spirit. I want to say today to you, brothers, that we need to be very careful with this Holy God that we have. The Holy Spirit is what unites the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is very precious. He is innocent, and He is holy. If we blaspheme the Holy Spirit, we will be in very extreme danger, and we might get to a point where we can't be granted repentance anymore.

This is a very stern warning that I want to send to brothers and sisters today. Do not take a chance. Do not argue with people. Do not accuse other believers of having demons. Let God Himself do the difference and drive the line between the wheat and the tares. It's not our job to start accusing people of having demons. And finally, if you have the Holy Spirit, if you claim that you are walking with Jesus, don't ever turn your back to God, and go back to deliberate sin. Don't drag Jesus Christ in the mud. Don't spit on His face. Don't outrage the Spirit of Grace. And may God bless you.
