Difference Between Holy Spirit and Your Conscience or Emotions

The difference between the Holy Spirit and our conscience is that the Holy Spirit is GOD and our conscience is our spiritual ears, the way we hear from Jesus when we pray.  The conscience can be a deceptive thing though because we can sear our conscience by loving darkness, by loving things that are evil.  Our conscience will become obsolete, we won’t even hear it because we have seared it so bad.  But on the flip side of that, if we are really trying to hear Jesus, sometimes our conscience gets oversensitive, to where we are just condemned all the time by our conscience being so sensitive.

I want to read to you what is written about this in 1 John chapter 3, I’m going to start in verse 16, “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us.  And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.  But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?  My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.  And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.  For if our heart condemns us, GOD IS GREATER THAN OUR HEART, and knows all things.  Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.  And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.   And this is His commandment:  that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.  Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him.  And by this we know that He abides in us by the Spirit whom He has given us.”

Clearly our heart CAN condemn us for a good reason.  For example, if we know there is someone in need and we don’t help them, our heart will condemn us and our conscience will tell us that we have done something that is NOT good.  But sometimes our conscience will be overbearing and tell us that we have to do something that is NOT really of the Holy Spirit, that God has NOT really asked us to do.  In those cases, the Lord Jesus knows our heart, that our heart is right before God and He is greater than our heart.  The way we can know the difference is by continuing to pray.  There is no way that we can just know apart from a prayer life.  We have to diligently ask Jesus the difference between our conscience, our feelings and the Holy Spirit and what He is really speaking to us.  So, if you are not sure the difference between your own conscience and the Holy Spirit, continue to pray and be diligent to ask Him the difference and He WILL.  Jesus promises to manifest to those who diligently seek Him and to those who love Him.  May the grace of Jesus be with you.
